Cowabbie Station

Cowabbie Station is located 35km north west of the township of Coolamon, (population 1,800) along the Ardlethan Road. Wagga Wagga (population 60,000), 80km to the south east is the main centre with all agricultural and engineering services provided.

Cowabbie Station covers a total area of 4741 hectares. The average rainfall at Cowabbie Station is 475mm and is evenly spread across the year with all months averaging around 40mm.

The soils on the property range from red loam on the rises through to heavier red-brown clay loam ‘Gilgae’ country, to heavy self-munching clay loams.

The capacity of these soils to hold water within the root zone ranges from about 100mm on the red loams to 180mm on the heavy black soils. While the lighter soils have a limited capacity to store water, they are better able to release limited amounts of rainfall to crop roots than heavier soils. The distribution of these soil types, 25% red loam, 50% gilgae and 25% self-mulching is a great asset to the property allowing a diverse range of crops to be grown.

The average percentage mix of crop types since commencement of operations have been as follows: Wheat 40%, Barley 20%, Canola 18% and Fallow 22%.

The topography of the country is sloping with rocky outcrops, particularly on Englefield. There is a sprinkling of trees and 350ha of lucerne has been planted to help balance the inflow and outflow of water into the soil, hence, rising water tables and salinity are not likely to emerge as issues. In recent years a number of tree plantations have been established as part of the Landcare effort on Englefield Plains.

The average percentage mix of crop types since commencement of operations have been as follows: Wheat 36%, Barley 28%, Canola 25% and Fallow 11%.
